Musicians of Ma'alwyck: News

The Poor Soldier Opera - October 15, 2008

Musicians of Ma'alwyck expands its range to present the 1783 comic opera the Poor Soldier by composer William Shield and playwright John O'Keeffe. A favorite work of George Washington, this musical farce was one of the most popular theater pieces, presented all around the eastern seaboard of Post-Revolutionary America. Albany saw many performances of the work during the 1790s and early 1800s.

Our production features singers from the New York City and Glimmerglass Operas, as well as the up and coming Duanesburg native Emalie Savoy. Accompanied by a twenty-two piece orchestra, designed and costumed with historically accurate materials and paired with a number of ancillary events, we know that you will enjoy this step back in time.

Tickets will be available in mid-November. Check our website for more details.

Come see why The Poor Soldier was one of the most popular operas of early America!

Our Programs - May 12, 2005

Musicians of Ma'alwyck frequently presents theme programs. During the 2003-2004 season, these programs were Alla Gitana! a program based on gypsy themes with music from eastern Europe, Austro-Hungaria and Spain spanning three centuries; Exploring Albany's Past a program based on materials discovered in the New York State Library including excerpts from the Bleecker family musical binders and the manuscripts of Albany's Euterpean Club; and Cantabile a program devoted to vocal and instrumental music of the early 1800s. Other themes include our popular Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy program with songs from all seven of their movies, and our Black History concert, which drew critical acclaim.
